Newborn Photography in Rotherham

Their First Chapter, Exactly as They Are

Your newborn doesn’t need to sleep on cue, stay perfectly still or fit into a list of poses to create beautiful photographs. Newborn photography at New Beginnings Studio in Rotherham is shaped around your baby and your family, with time for feeds, cuddles, settling and simply being together. We’re here to preserve who they are right now — the expressions, the tiny details and the brand-new connections between you — so when those first weeks have passed and become the next chapter, your photographs can take you straight back to how small they were and how it felt to be right there in that moment again.

When is the best time for newborn photography?

For the classic tiny, sleepy newborn photographs, the first two weeks after birth — often around 5 to 14 days old — can be a lovely time for a session. But there isn’t a deadline for beautiful newborn photography. If those first days pass in a blur, your baby arrives earlier or later than expected, or you simply need more time to settle at home, we can shape the session around the stage your baby is at. Older newborns may be more alert, bringing beautiful expressions, eye contact and connection into the photographs.

When should I book my newborn photography session?

If newborn photography is something you’d like to include in those first few weeks, it’s worth getting in touch while you’re still pregnant rather than waiting until your baby arrives. Your due date gives us a starting point, and the actual session can then be planned around your little one’s arrival. Booking early gives you the best choice of available session dates at New Beginnings Studio in Rotherham — but if your baby is already here, please don’t assume you’ve missed the opportunity for a newborn session. The first two weeks are simply a guide — beautiful newborn photography can still be created beyond that early window.

What if my baby doesn’t sleep during the newborn session?

That’s absolutely fine — a newborn session doesn’t rely on your baby being asleep. Some babies drift off quickly, some stay wide-eyed and curious, and others move between the two. At New Beginnings Studio, we allow plenty of time for feeding, changing, cuddling and settling, without rushing or trying to force sleep. Awake photographs can be just as beautiful, especially when they capture eye contact, expressions and those first little glimpses of personality. The session simply follows how your baby is feeling on the day.

How long does a newborn photography session take?

At New Beginnings Studio, we recommend allowing around two to three hours for a newborn photography session — not because your baby will be photographed continuously, but because newborn sessions need to follow your baby’s pace rather than a strict timetable. There’s plenty of time for feeding, changing, cuddles and settling without watching the clock. Some sessions may finish sooner, while others may need a few more pauses, and that’s absolutely fine. We shape the session around how your baby is feeling on the day, keeping the experience calm and unhurried so everything can unfold naturally.

Is newborn photography safe?

Your baby’s safety and comfort come before any photographs. At New Beginnings Studio, newborn sessions are calm, patient and never rushed. We are both first aid trained, and we will never force your baby into a pose or position that doesn’t feel comfortable or natural. We allow plenty of time for feeding, settling and cuddles, and any props or equipment used during the session are chosen and positioned with your baby’s safety in mind.

What should I bring to a newborn photography session?

You don’t need to bring the whole nursery with you. We recommend bringing the everyday things you already use to keep your baby comfortable — enough nappies and wipes, feeding supplies, a dummy if your baby normally uses one, and a spare outfit or two for those inevitable little accidents. A favourite blanket or comfort item can be useful too. At New Beginnings Studio, we also have a selection of clothing, wraps and props available for newborn sessions, and we can talk through these with you before your photography session so everything feels right for your baby and the style of photographs you’d like. Most importantly, bring whatever normally helps your baby feel settled and secure. There’s no need to buy anything special for the session. We want the experience to feel easy, familiar and centred around your baby.

Can parents and siblings be included in a newborn photography session?

Parents and siblings are an important part of the story and are welcome to be included in the session. Some families want a few photographs together, some prefer to focus mostly on the baby, and others want a mixture of both. We’ll talk through what feels right for your family before the session so there’s no pressure to be in every photograph. If siblings are joining in, we’ll keep things relaxed and work around their age, confidence and attention span rather than expecting them to sit perfectly on cue.

What should parents and siblings wear for a newborn photography session?

There’s no need for everyone to match. We usually recommend choosing comfortable clothing in soft, neutral or muted tones that work well together without looking identical. Simple pieces tend to photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your baby and the connections between you, while large logos, very bright colours or busy patterns can sometimes draw attention away from your baby and the moments we’re trying to capture. For the baby, New Beginnings Studio also has a selection of newborn clothing, wraps and props available, which we can discuss with you before the session.

What happens if my baby needs feeding, changing or settling during the session?

Feeding, changing and settling are all part of a newborn session, so there’s never any pressure to rush through them. If your baby needs a feed, a fresh nappy, a cuddle or simply some time to settle, we pause for as long as needed and continue when everyone is comfortable again. At New Beginnings Studio, those breaks are built into the experience rather than treated as interruptions. We want you to be able to concentrate on your baby rather than watching the clock, knowing the session can simply pick up again when the moment feels right.

What if my baby was premature or has spent time in hospital?

If your baby arrived early or has spent time in hospital, there’s no need to rush a newborn photography session simply to fit a particular age window. Once your baby is home and you feel ready, we can plan the session around your circumstances and allow for any extra time or pauses that may be needed. Every baby’s beginning is different, and that is part of their story. If there are any ongoing care needs or anything you’d like us to be aware of, we can talk through this with you before the session so everything can be planned with your baby’s comfort and wellbeing in mind.

What if my baby is unwell on the day of the session?

If your baby is unwell on the day of the session, please let us know rather than feeling that you need to push ahead. Your baby’s wellbeing comes first, and we’d much rather rearrange the session than try to photograph them when they’re not feeling their best. If you’re unsure whether to attend, get in touch and we can talk it through with you. There’s no pressure to go ahead with the session simply because it was already booked.

How should I prepare my baby for a newborn photography session?

There’s no need to completely change your baby’s normal routine before coming to New Beginnings Studio. Feed, change and settle your baby as you normally would, and bring the things you already know help them feel comfortable. If your baby arrives asleep, awake, hungry or needing a cuddle, that’s absolutely fine — we’ll work with how they are on the day rather than expecting everything to go to plan. Before your session, we’ll also talk through anything useful to know in advance, so you can arrive feeling calm and prepared, which can help your baby settle into the session more naturally.

What if I don’t feel comfortable having my photo taken?

That’s absolutely fine. Not everyone enjoys being in front of the camera, and there’s no pressure to be photographed in a way that feels uncomfortable. If you’d like to be included, we can keep things simple and natural — perhaps a cuddle, a close-up of hands, or a quiet moment with your baby rather than anything that feels overly posed. If you’d rather stay behind the scenes, that’s fine too. The session is about creating photographs that feel right for your family, not asking you to perform for the camera.

Is my baby too old for a newborn photography session?

Not at all. The first couple of weeks are often recommended for those tiny, sleepy newborn photographs, but they are only a guide — not a cut-off point. As your baby gets a little older, the photographs may simply look different, with more alert moments, eye contact, expressions and their personality beginning to show. At New Beginnings Studio, we work with the stage your baby is at rather than trying to make them fit a particular age or style of photograph. If your baby is already a few weeks old, please still get in touch — there is still so much of this early chapter worth capturing.

Will little marks or skin changes be softened in my baby’s photographs?

Temporary little things such as baby acne, dry or flaky skin, redness and small scratches can usually be gently softened when we edit your finished photographs at your request. We like to keep editing natural, though — the aim is never to make your baby look overly smoothed or different from how you remember them. Birthmarks and other features that are part of your baby will normally be left as they are, unless you specifically ask us to talk through whether you’d like anything adjusted. If there is anything in particular you are concerned about before your session, just let us know and we can talk it through with you.

Where will my newborn photography session take place?

Your newborn photography session will take place at New Beginnings Studio in Rotherham, South Yorkshire. Our studio is set up specifically for baby and family photography, giving us a calm, comfortable space where everything we need is close at hand. Because sessions are by appointment, we can prepare the studio in advance and keep the experience private and unhurried for you and your family. Before your session, we’ll also send you the practical information you need so you know exactly where to come and what to expect when you arrive.

What happens during a newborn photography session?

When you arrive at New Beginnings Studio, there’s no rush to get started straight away. We’ll take a little time to help everyone settle in and talk through how your baby is feeling on the day. The session then moves at your baby’s pace, with plenty of time for feeding, changing, cuddling and settling whenever needed. We’ll gently guide you through the photographs we’re creating, but nothing is forced and there’s no expectation for your baby to behave a certain way. Some moments may be quiet and sleepy, while others may be wide awake and full of expression — both can make beautiful photographs. The aim is for the whole experience to feel calm, comfortable and natural, while we capture the little details and connections you’ll want to remember.

Can I choose the style, colours and props for my newborn session?

Yes. Before your session, we can talk through the kind of look you have in mind, including colours, wraps, clothing and props, so the photographs feel personal to you and your family. New Beginnings Studio has a selection of wraps, clothing and props available to use, and we can help you choose what works well together without making the session feel over-styled. If there’s something meaningful you’d like to bring from home, such as a special blanket or keepsake, we can also discuss whether it can be included safely and naturally. The aim is to create a set of photographs that feels thoughtful and individual to you, while still keeping the focus on your baby.

How do I book a newborn photography session?

Booking your newborn photography session is simple. You can get in touch with New Beginnings Studio in Rotherham, South Yorkshire, through our Contact page, by email or by phone, and we’ll talk through your due date or your baby’s age, the type of photographs you’re hoping for and any other questions you may have.

We can then look at availability that’s suitable for you and explain the next steps clearly, so you know exactly what to expect before anything is confirmed.

If your baby has already arrived, it’s not an issue at all — we can simply plan the session around you, your baby and your family, and make sure everything feels right for you from the very beginning.

When will I see my newborn photographs?

After your newborn session, we’ll carefully select and edit your photographs so they’re finished naturally and consistently, without rushing the process. Before you book, we’ll explain how long the editing process usually takes so you’ll have a clear idea of when your finished photographs will be ready to view.

Once they’re ready, we’ll let you know and provide the details for viewing your finished photographs. We prefer to take the time needed to give each photograph the care it deserves rather than rush the editing process.
